Since its inception in 1981, the Shelter Island 10K Community Fund has given away over $128,000 to specific programs and needs that benefit the Island community. Among the groups and programs that have received substantial funds are the following:
• Scholarship Program - Every year the 10K Community Fund awards a sizeable scholarship or scholarships to graduating Shelter Island High School seniors who have proven to be strong, positive role models for other students. Each year the Community Fund's scholarship
contribution amount is generously matched by Ken and Donna Wright of Shelter Island.
• Youth Programs - Thousands of dollars have been given to a wide range of youth
programs, including the following: basketball courts, school sports uniforms, Girl Scouts
and Boy Scouts of America, a local playground, Project FIT, Project EXCEL, student
exchange programs, and drug education programs including Red Ribbon and TOMA,
among others.
• Community Groups - Substantial monies have been given to a variety of
community organizations, including the Shelter Island Red Cross, the Mashomack
Preserve chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the American Legion, the Shelter Island
Historical Society, the Shelter Island Public Library, and the local Senior Citizens program.
